Teen Depression Problem Solution Essay free essay sample

In fact, â€Å"11% of adolescents have a depressive disorder by age 18,† according to the National Institute of Mental Health’s website. This statistic may not seem like a lot, but it means that 11% of teens have a serious problem; they feel like this frequently, yet still go on, in most cases without treatment. Although feeling depressed happens to everybody, according to Medical News Today, most people don’t get it as badly as these 11% do, and also not as often. But if you’ve ever experienced this feeling, imagine it happening all the time or reoccurring at unpredictable intervals. Also, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s website, â€Å"Depression rates triple between the ages of 12 and 15 (from 5. 1% to 15. 2%). † This shows the massive increase in depression among teens, but so what? Well, this disorder changes people’s lives, and sometimes it even ends them. According to Suicide. org, â€Å"Over 90 percent of people who die by suicide have a mental illness at the time of their death. We will write a custom essay sample on Teen Depression Problem Solution Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page And the most common mental illness is depression. † Imagine teens ending their lives, because of a disease many people don’t even recognize as a disease. Many others tell them, â€Å"Snap out of it! †, but those people have no idea how crushing and consuming the feelings can be. Too many people are uneducated, and this can lead to worsened effects of depression. Another lasting effect of depression that not many people know about is bipolar disease. â€Å"15% of teens with depression eventually develop bipolar disorder,† says Teenhelp. com. Again, this disease affects people’s lives, not only the victims, but the people surrounding them too. Family and friends can be affected greatly by having a depressed sibling or friend. According to Helpguide. rg, â€Å"If someone you love is depressed, you may be experiencing any number of difficult emotions, including helplessness, frustration, anger, fear, guilt, and sadness. These feelings are all normal. It’s not easy dealing with a friend or family member’s depression. And if you don’t take care of yourself, it can become overwhelming. † With the number of depressed people so high, imagine the number of people that are close to those with the disease; those people are suffering as well. All in all, this disease is terribly effective at changing peoples lives for the worse, and we need to help solve it. Three possible solutions for controlling and preventing depression are reducing pressure on teens, making sure people get a proper night’s sleep, and exercising. One way to help prevent and/ or cure depression is to reduce the amount of pressure put on teens. Many adults might think teens just complain too much, or that they’re exaggerating about how much work they have and how stressed they are, but Media. swarthmore. edu disagrees. â€Å"Early adolescents deal with a number of physical, cognitive, social and environmental change that often occur together and may increase their risk for a variety of difficulties, including†¦ depression. Like I said before, depression rates triple between the ages 12 and 15, which could very possibly be due to the enormous amounts of pressure put on teens. Sadly, many people are unaware of this, and dismiss behavior as â€Å"moody teen syndrome† or something of the sort. However, these signs are vital to early diagnosis, wh ich could end up saving a teen’s life. If there was less pressure put on teens however, maybe suicide from depression wouldn’t be the 3rd leading cause of death among teens. Healthyconsumer. com also says that, â€Å"Teenagers are under an enormous amount of pressure. Expectations are very high in many aspects of their lives, and to live up to those expectations, they occasionally must sacrifice doing things they want to do for things that have to do. † This could be another main contributor to depression. If you look at little kids playing, they’re laughing and happy, because they’re doing what they love, but if you look at teens and adults, you rarely see them playing. If you ask a teenager why they aren’t playing, they’ll usually grumble, â€Å"I don’t have time, I have too much homework. † Homework usually starts picking up around 6th or 7th grade; depression rates triple between the ages of 12 and 15. Maybe if teens were less stressed with homework and such, they could do more things they enjoy, and maybe they’d be less depressed. A second way to help prevent and/ or cure this crippling disease is to ensure people get a proper night’s sleep. Don’t you love the feeling after a long, relaxing, refreshing night’s sleep? You might be thinking, â€Å"Sure, but how does that help with depression? † Well, Chris Iliades, MD says that, â€Å"Teens whose parents set a 10 p. m bedtime (and enforce it) are 25% less likely to experience teenage depression†¦ according to a study of data from 15,000 adolescents. The potential benefits of this solution could be huge; being able to cure the crushing effects of depression by sleeping seems like a simple and easy thing to do, yet how simple is it? With all of the work students are assigned, this takes us back to the issue of too much pressure on teens. However, if we were able to conquer that, and teachers st arted assigning less work, imagine what a liberating and positive effect it would have on teens! Also, sleep can be an alternative to more serious treatments for depression, for people who aren’t ready to take that step, according to longevity. bout. com. â€Å"Sleep impacts many of the chemicals in your body, including serotonin. People with a deficiency in serotonin are more likely to suffer from depression. You can help prevent depression by making sure you are getting the right amount of sleep, between 7 and 9 hours each night. † Like it says here, sleep is one of the body’s natural antidepressants. If teens were able to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, it could possibly reduce depression, and all of the negative side-effects that come with it by up to 50%! This could change many teens’ current situations, and lead to them living happier, less stressful, more fulfilling lives. A third way to help prevent and/ or cure depression is to exercise more. Everyone knows that exercise is god for you, but can it really help cure depression? In fact, it can, according to web. md. com. They say that, â€Å"When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. Like sleep, exercise is one of your body’s natural antidepressants, and is much cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription antidepressants. Also, exercise is something many people enjoy, and can be fun depending on what you do. Imagine the benefits of doing something fun that you enjoy, plus the rewards of the endorphins being released into your body! Many people are probably skeptica l that something as simple as exercise can be as beneficial as something mixed up in a lab, specifically targeted to fix depression, but Gerard Sanacova, MD and PhD, disagrees. He says that, â€Å"A 2009 analysis found that exercise lightens depression as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or antidepressants. † Not only is exercise as effective as CBT or antidepressants, it’s also easier to access, and safer for teens. In addition, exercise can be put into place in schools, which could help solve and even prevent depression is adolescents, opposed to giving everyone antidepressants, which would be very difficult, expensive, and unsafe. It’s also a lot less scary and committal than antidepressants, especially for a teen who doesn’t want too many people finding out about their condition. There are also all of the other wonderful benefits of exercise to consider, in addition to its anti-depressive qualities. It’s a win-win situation! As you can see, depression is a horrible, and serious problem among teens everywhere today, and it needs to be addressed. Three ways to solve this horrendous disease are to reduce the crushing pressure put on teens these days, raise people’s serotonin levels by getting a 7-9 hour-long night’s sleep, and raise endorphin levels by getting out and exercising. All of these solutions have been proven to help, but other options include CBT, antidepressants, and therapy. If you or a loved one are wrestling with the crippling effects of depression, seek help, and educate yourselves about what you can do to defeat this horrible ailment. Just remember, you’re not worthless. You can always do something to right those lingering wrongs. Everyone is good at something. There’s always somebody who loves you. You’re definitely not alone, and most importantly, never give up.

Used Transitively, Avail Is a Reflexive Verb

Used Transitively, Avail Is a Reflexive Verb Used Transitively, Avail Is a Reflexive Verb Used Transitively, Avail Is a Reflexive Verb By Maeve Maddox I noticed the following sentence in a travel blog. It refers to the availability of rental lockers in French railway stations: [Travelers] can therefore once again avail of these services particularly in main train stations in France. In this sentence, avail requires an object: avail themselves of these services. Avail can be used intransitively (without an object). Here are some examples of the intransitive use of avail from Websters Unabridged: Heroism could not avail against the enemy fire. The wall could not avail to protect the town against cannon. No comparison would avail; he was one of a kind. When used transitively, the object of avail is usually the reflexive form of the subject: I availed myself of the library facilities. He availed himself of the free lunch. They availed themselves of the coupon. We availed ourselves of the use of the neighbors lawnmower. Here are some quotations from newspapers: (It seems George over-cheered at their gathering two years ago when the New York Giants won the big game, then availed himself of the toilet in their master bedroom.)Newman shows up near the end, toting a box (www.usatoday.com) the ability to live and work throughout the EU in exchange for a cash investment. We know that among those who have availed themselves of this right are billionaire Russian oligarchs and Ukrainians accused of corruption. Analysis of the Spike Lees Movie Do the Right Thing

Analyzing Spike Lee's movies to do the right thing For my lens analysis, I chose a shot from the Spike Lee movie Do the right thing. This is the second shot after the climax riot. It is characterized by the mayor of Da's and the sister of the mother corresponding to the noisy incident of the previous night. After the police killed Rahhim Radio, the block was destroyed because he and Thrall were destroyed due to a fight due to Radio Rahim's radio box capacity. The struggle at a very superficial level is related to loud stereo, but the real meaning of struggle is related by the climax of anger and tension among the characters of previously caused movies. Let's see Do Do Right Thing as an example of the first film analysis paper. This is a movie supervised by Spike Lee released in 1989. In 2007, it appeared in the most controversial movie list. It is a famous movie, but many people have not seen it yet, but often assign right things. Writing an analysis article for a movie is not too di fficult. You will love to look at the movie and drill down on its core meaning. If you still do not know how to write a paper, please refer to the following article. I will analyze my thesis and explain how to write analysis papers. You can borrow a custom lighting service. The movie title, Do The Right Thing, is a powerful rhetorical design used by Spike Lee. Da Mayor, played by a recent great actor, Ossie Davis, told Spike Lee to play Mookie to do the right thing. Nobody has said correct content in the movie. Lee told the audience to do the right thing, but he never told them what it is. Instead he created a context in the film and forced the audience to draw their own conclusions about what is right. Some people think Li's words are obvious and easy to identify, but it is obvious that you can react without knowing what Li is trying to react to you. Spike concluded that this response reflects the personal belief of the race. He wants the understanding of what is right for the audience. Spike advocates three arguments about what is right, but never did we tell us in the movie what he thought it should be. The first parameter is the movie itself.

Strategy Development In The Global Automotive Industry Essay

Strategy Development In The Global Automotive Industry - Essay Example Modern technology has made it easier to manage and expand businesses, without even moving out of your office. As the world is getting smaller, markets are getting bigger! Every industry is witnessing mergers, acquisitions, a foray into new and emerging markets and a boost in sales and profits. The customer has never had it so good! Competition on a global basis has resulted in reduced costs, better quality, improved responsiveness and excellent customer service for any product. The automobile industry is a classic example to demonstrate this phenomenon. Let us take the examples of two automobile companies: Daimler Chrysler and Honda and examine how globalization has affected the operations of these two companies. In 1998, US-based Chrysler Corp. merged with German automaker Daimler-Benz (1926-1998) of Stuttgart, Germany in a deal that was expected to reshape the auto industry. The deal created a new entity, DaimlerChrysler, which was the highest revenue earner in Germany. The best of technology, safety and comfort in automobiles came together to create the world's best known car company. With the merger, it was thought that Chrysler would have a better access to the European market, while Mercedes parent Daimler-Benz would gain a bigger foothold in the American market. This also gave a chance to both companies to reduce costs. Against globalization According to the article "The DaimlerChrysler Merger" submitted at Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth, http://mba.tuck.dartmouth.edu/pdf/2002-1-0071.pdf , accessed 5th May,2008, "In 2001, three years after a "merger of equals" with Daimler-Benz, the outlook is much bleaker. The financial data is sobering: Chrysler Group is on track to hemorrhage $3 billion this year, its U.S. market share has sunk to 14%, earnings have slid by 20%, and the once independent company has been fully subordinated to Stuttgart4. Its key revenue generators - the minivan, the Jeep SUV, and the supercharged pickup truck - have all come under heavy competition from Toyota, Honda, General Motors and Ford. Chrysler continues to make few passenger cars of note, save the Neon and limited-release Viper and Prowler." Competition from Toyota According to Premium Brand Analysis http://www.pwc.com/extweb/industry.nsf/docid/ccd6ae64aad8ea31802570d90035614e/$file/wylie_stbildagen07.pdf,accessed on 5th May,2008, "In the EU, European Premium brands have attained - and maintained - a position of dominance in the Premium market space. European Premium leads the way, in the USA, but others maybe catching up fast. In the USA, European Premium brands have also grown, but have also faced competition from Asian brands. US Premium segment is also targeted by Japanese Premium brands (Lexus, Infinti and Acura), which collectively held 3.8% of the market in 2005" Competition from Asian bigwigs like Toyota is definitely eating into Daimler Chrysler's profit margins across the globe. People today have a choice between a pricier, classy Mercedes and an equally efficient, dependable, but much more economical Toyota! Company : Honda For Globalization Through globalization, even small and mid-sized

Respones paper Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Respones paper - Movie Review Example The fiction in the movie or novel finds itself in the fact that all main heroes gathered by the author in The Yacoubian Building (a luxury apartment building which was built in Cairo)  are invented by him. Nevertheless, the borders between reality and fiction are blurred for these people, only with different names, can be among the audience of readers or viewers right now, as they â€Å"†¦are people of our world†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Hamid). One of the outrageous themes raised in the work is the false Islamic piety. The main characters including an impoverished aristocrat and a self-proclaimed expert on women, a godly student, a newspaper editor and a corrupt politician, all of them perceive themselves as Allah-fearing citizens who honor their religion and lead a righteous way of life. Still there is a small remark that must be underlined – our heroes go on about their desires and feelings which are inconsistent with the concepts of their faith. In such a case they simply interpret the commandments of the Koran in a favorable for them light to justify their actions and not to be sinners in their own eyes as well as in the eyes of God. The strong belief of almost every Muslim is that â€Å"†¦God bless him and grant him peace†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Aswany 4) and our characters are not the exception. Another important feature of contemporary Egyptian social life is its injustice and inequality of people of different classes. In this respect the Yacoubian Building itself serves as the symbol of the division of the poor and the rich, according to their situation in the edifice, that is, the poor are in the upper and almost unsuitable rooms and the elite is on the lower floors with large comfortable apartments. Nevertheless men of every social class are the same in one question – relations with women. As it shown in the novel and film, different people have different love affairs with representatives of different sex. However, the place of a woman is still the central one in the lives of

Victorian Britain Essay Example for Free

Victorian Britain Essay In Victorian times people were more susceptible to being lied to and were a lot more gullible, which is probably why they could believe a lot of the writing more. This is because the Victorians suspension of disbelief was far greater than any of ours today. The Sherlock Holmes mysteries were perfect for their time, but the Holmes character was also reflective of perfection, whereas in todays society we generally prefer our characters to have more flaws, to make them seem more human, although Sherlock Holmes classically still appeals to many. The Cardboard Box describes Sherlock Holmes not only as a very good detective but also as an ear expert, which today we would not believe as very few people could be this clever or perfect, but then the Victorians liked it to be like that and they would believe it, each ear is as a rule quite distinctive, and differs from all other ones. In last years anthropological journal you will find two short monographs from my pen upon the subject. I had therefore examined the ears in the box with the eyes of an expert, and had carefully noted their anatomical peculiarities. Imagine my surprise then, when, on looking at Miss Cushion, I perceived that her ear corresponded exactly with the female ear which I had just inspected. This illustrates Sherlock Holmes talking about his knowledge of ears, such intelligence of which is highly unlikely if he is also admitted as being a very good detective. In The Man with the Twisted Lip, Holmes has somehow managed to figure out that the dirty beggar, Boone, was in fact the well respected, upper class Neville St Clair Holmes stooped the water jug, moistened his sponge, and then rubbed it twice vigorously across and down the prisoners face. Let me introduce you he shouted, to Mr Neville St Clair, of Lee, in the county of Kent. Somehow even though it has deluded every other detective and policemen working on this crime, Holmes had managed to figure it out when no one else could. This again is highly unbelievable that he could have figured it out as he had an insufficient amount of clues. But what is even more unbelievable is from The Speckled Band, where all the clues Holmes had was a dog lead, a bowl of milk and a whistling sound. Somehow he managed to figure out that from this a snake was ordered by the whistling sounds and fed on the milk, and was controlled using the dog lead, and that the snake went up through a fake vent into the next the bedroom and climbed down a fake bell pull to bite the victim and then ordered back by the whistle and tempted back into a safe by the saucer of milk. It is unlikely that anyone, even Sherlock Holmes, should have been able to figure that out with the clues he had. Finally he took the bell rope in his hand and gave it a brisk tug. Why its a dummy, said he. Wont it ring? No its not even attached to a wire. This is very interesting you can see now that it is fastened to a hook just above where the ventilator is. No one else had realised that the bell rope did not work, no one had even realised it wasnt hooked up to a wire but one quick look around the room by Holmes and was enough to see that it was not and he also noticed that there was a fake ventilator when he didnt even know where it led to. All these things show us that many people of Victorian Britain were a lot more susceptible to unbelievable things whereas today we tend to prefer things to be more realistic and more huma. We prefer a character to be flawed, whereas Victorians preferred their characters to be perfect, e. g. Sherlock Holmes. So, in conclusion the Sherlock Holmes stories can tell us a lot about Victorian Britain. We can identify that it was a place where class was everything, and that you should stay in the class you were born into. The upper class citizens were the people that mainly read these books and they appeared to like the seedier side of things, as they thought it was a true aspect of what really happened, which they preferred not to accept, but if it was in a book it was acceptable. The British people thought that they were better than every other ethnic group and saw it as being okay to discriminate against them and be racist whereas today we would not accept it and it is a crime. There was a lot more common crime in those times as well, which came up a lot in the stories as each was based around a crime, with even the higher class people committing crimes like going to opium dens among other things. Poverty as well was a lot more rampant in the Victorian times as no one seemed to be bothered about the poor, as it was part of their everyday life to be or to see a lot of poverty in the streets. The stories also told us about the Victorians love of all things gothic, the architecture, dark clothes and writing; gothic writing contained a lot of murder, ghosts, evilness and darkness. They were also depicted as being a lot more gullible than we are today and would believe almost anything that they were told in stories and were not bothered if it did not seem real. We can see this from Holmes perfect character and how he did not even have one flaw. To summarise, Sir Arthur Conan Doyles stories combine many elements which give us a very good representation of Victorian life.

Madness and Insanity in Shakespeares Hamlet Essay -- Essays on Shakesp

Madness and Insanity in Shakespeare's Hamlet         Ã‚   Shakespeare's Hamlet is a master of deception. Hamlet decides to make Claudius believe that he is insane, but the scheme backfires when everyone, except Claudius, falls for it. Ophelia is one of those who believes Hamlet lost his mind, and when he does not return her love, she is so brokenhearted that she commits suicide. Near the end of the tragedy, Hamlet plays the part so well, that he convinces himself he is insane. Clearly, Hamlet's plan to put on an antic disposition is a tragic error.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Hamlet's plan for the antic disposition is to fool all the courtiers, especially Claudius. This way Claudius will not think that Hamlet is capable of killing him and usurping the throne. Hamlet clearly hates Claudius, and wants revenge for his father. "A little more than kin, and less than kind!" (I; ii; 65) Hamlet tries repeatedly to portray the image of insanity, but often Claudius sees through the antic disposition. "Love? his affections do not that way tend,/ Nor what he spake, though it lacked form a little,/ Was not like madness." (III; i; 159-161) After Claudius realizes that Hamlet is not actually insane, but playing the part for his antic disposition, he sends Hamlet to England to be executed.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   And, England, if my love thou hold'st at aught-   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   As my great power thereof may give thee sense,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Since yet thy cicatrice looks raw and red   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   After the Danish sword, and thy free awe   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Pays homage to us- thou mayst not coldly set   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  ... ...rol of his mind, but as the plot unfolds he is thrown into a fit of true madness.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Through examination, it is proven that Hamlet's choice of displaying an antic disposition is a tragic error on his part. Claudius was the only courtier who sees through the act, Ophelia fell into utter madness, and Hamlet convinces himself that he has lost his mind. As Claudius said, "Madness in great ones must not unwatched go." (III; i; 185)    Works Cited Bloom, Harold. Modern Critical Interpretations Of Hamlet. New York, NY: Chelsea House Publishers, 1986. According to Abraham Lincoln Essay

According to Abraham Lincoln, â€Å"Your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing† (Mills 3). I was inspired by this quote that speaks of success, which I will describe as a golden star that everyone wants to reach. This quote is similar to most of the leadership quotes because it speaks of ways to reach success, but, this quote is special in a way that it could be related to the self-fulfilling prophecy. Simply put, the main road to success is the â€Å"will to succeed. † I’m sure each of us has experienced actually failing a task whenever our mind is embedded with the phrase: â€Å"I can’t do this! † If you believe that you will be successful in any endeavor you want to take, then, you have taken the first step to becoming a person who is the â€Å"king or queen of success. † I myself have noticed that whenever I put into mind that I will â€Å"win,† the outcome turns out to be truly positive. This essay can help readers realize that their goals can be achieved by first believing in themselves. If a person always expects that he/she will succeed in something specific, then his/her expectations will most probably turn into a reality as what the so-called â€Å"self-fulfilling prophecy† suggests. Rosenthal, in his book: â€Å"Experimenter Effects in Behavioral Research,† said: â€Å"Events tend to turn out as one has hypothesized, not because of some great insight but because one behaves in a manner to achieve this outcome. † Believing in this theory would mean that we would have to love ourselves more, believe that we have what it takes to win in this â€Å"game† called life, and, at the same time, because of our mind set, act in such a way that enables us to achieve our dreams. Bear in Mind: Success is in your hands, just believe! Belief, however, is the first step to success. The confidence and passion to go where no man has traveled and the will and perseverance to stay that course are the next steps on the road to success. It is easy to claim the belief in success but it is a totally different matter to take concrete actions to prove that resolve. Many people have claimed to have the utmost confidence in succeeding in life but there are only a few who can say that they have really succeeded in life. The reason for this is that without action nothing will result. As the rule of Isaac Newton on action and reaction dictates, â€Å"For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. † This means that one must take definite steps in life in order to even be considered as a success in life (Mills 3). As the world continues to change and becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful life to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so (Mills 3). While it has been said by Rosenthal that love for one’s self is the most important thing, there are other factors that one has to seriously consider in order to become successful in life. Once one has realized what one wants to do in life, the next step lies in realizing that dream. There is only so much that one can realize by dreaming without taking definite action. The thing that sets successful people apart from everyone else is the fact that these people have lived the dream. They were not simply content to dream and believe in themselves. These people have failed and still continued to believe in themselves. They did not falter when the whole world did not believe in them. The thing that counted the most for them was that they believed and they did something about that belief. The â€Å"will to succeed† and the â€Å"will to begin† are the two most important rules for success in the world today. Everyone can have the â€Å"will to succeed† but not everyone has the â€Å"will to begin. † To be a winner in life, one has to have the will and the act. One cannot achieve anything without both of these traits. Works Cited: Mills, Dawson A. â€Å"Continuing Education Offerings Abound. † The Virginian-Pilot [Virginia] 28 January 1996:3. Biography of General Douglas Haig

One of the worst ones was when he sent a lot ot troops to an unsuccessful offensive on the Somme River in July-November 1916, which lead to 420,000 British casualties. The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles that happened in World War 1 and it was the bloodiest war that happened. HIS strategy of attrition (â€Å"kill more Germans†) also resulted in enormous numbers of British casualties. Yet another flawed plan had been hatched by General Haig in an attempt to defeat the Germans on the French and Belgian Flanders in 1917. This attack was also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. It was a significant attack and a rather large one for It was estimated that 4. 5 million shells were fired from 3,000 guns from the British side. This attack resulted In huge amounts of casualnes for the British. Haig's original plan for this attack was to push across the Gheluvelt Plateau, take the village of Passchendaele. and then break through to open country. But his attack was not s uccessful and the heavy rain that happened generally slowed the attack down. The thick mud in the trenches clogged up rifles and immobilised tanks. Also the fact that he drainage systems there were mainly destroyed due to the bombing that took place there made everything worse. It was believed that the third Ypres offensive was mixed with his personal teelings. General Haig wanted to achieve a British victory without the help of the French because he wanted to embarrass PM David Lloyd George, who had humiliated him earlier and he wanted to prove that the days of the cavalry had not passed through that attack. In general his talth tor cavalry didn't do him a lot ot good, also he was slightly too traditional for he said that the machine gun was a much over rated weapornHowever, his reputation as a great military leader was not wrong. He had lead amazing battles and allowed the British to progress slowly to their victory In 1918. He did exactly this during his attempt to defeat Germans in July-November 1917; though he had only weakened the Germans. it had paved the way for the final assault. He also naa an amazing sense Tor war. He was one 0T tne Tew people wno naa Knew was going to be a long and terrifying war. But his sense had helped him and his country tremendously when he was able to finally defeat the Germans and brought the war to a conclusion before the end of 1918.

Judgementality, contemporary prejudism in the context of the Scarlet letter

Judgementality, contemporary prejudism in the context of the Scarlet letter JudgementalalityOJ Simpson was suspected of killing his ex-wife and her friend outside herhome. Before he was arrested for the suspicion he was already tried, convictedand, executed in the minds of all of America. Before he went to trial everyoneknew the 'truth,' everyone had already decided his fate before the evidencewas presented. No one knew what happened but we all formed our opinionsand theories of how he did it, why he did it, and if he should be killed or just getlife in prison. Our world is too judgmental and it always has been. Even in thetime Hawthorne wrote of in The Scarlet Letter and in 'The Ministers Black Veil'people judged before they knew the truth.Objects were judged even though they had no relevance on what reallyhappened. In 'The Ministers Black Veil' no one knew why the minister worethe veil but everyone assumed it meant shame and that he had something toThis is the title page for the first edition of Th...hide. I think that the minister thought that it was his mission to show howsuperficial the people were. The ministers own fiancee left him because no oneknew anything about the veil he wore. Again in The Scarlet Letter, I can thinkof two more major examples where an object was used as a sign or omen. Thefirst is of course the letter, it meant evil, shame, and sin to the townspeople. All it was, was a letter nothing more, nothing less. The second object thatpeople took as a prolific sign was the weeds on a grave. They reasoned that theweeds were there because of the sins of that person, and that the weeds grewbecause flowers could not. People then and now take symbols too deeply andmeaningful.People often take...

Compare and contrast the regional variations that are prevalent in the Research Paper

Compare and contrast the regional variations that are prevalent in the Romanesque Church architecture of Lombardy, Germany and the Low Countries, and Tuscany Give examples - Research Paper Example This style of construction and building can be identified in almost all parts of Europe. The most notable buildings that are still standing presently are the churches, with some of these being the large cathedrals and abbey churches (Jackson 32-34). According to Fletcher (25-27), the church was the ultimate emblematic structure of the Romanesque architecture, and since they were constructed to meet specific needs of liturgy, their construction was depended on the needs. These churches had similar architectural designs that included the thick walls semi-circular arches, towers, roofs and round arches in arcades, doors, windows and vaults (Jackson 36). However, these churches differed in the ground plans, the shape and position of towers, shape of columns, piers and the east end, and the building materials (Fletcher 28). This paper seeks to give the similarities and differences between the Romanesque Church architecture of Germany and the Low Countries, Lombardy and Tuscany. The Romanesque architects constructed myriad buildings with most of them being abbey and village churches, castles and cathedrals (Itcher 23). All these churches were constructed to shelter, welcome and hold the faithful in an environment that was dignified and gave a sense of depth and an ambulatory apse (Flecher 31). The Romanesque churches were built with an interior that was complex and with a densely molded material typified by strong chiaroscuro differences that strengthened the plastic outlines of the columns and heightened the sense of encrusted distinctive thickness and spatial depth (Jackson 44-45). From a structural standpoint, this was successful due to the implementation of the system of anchorages taken as longitudinal units; they were made to be spatial bodies that were added to the next one in a symmetrical manner (Icher 49). The buildings had an isolated crossing that was a normal aspect
